Series Overview
The Presence + Absence series is a process of gradually moving toward an unknown. Most of the pieces are large in scale, allowing a language of marks to be developed expressively with the physical engagement that comes from standing face-to-face with a human sized sheet of paper, and the large gestural movements required to cover the surface.
The series uses charcoal, graphite, ink and acrylic paint to alternate between building a surface of marks, to then push areas back by camouflaging with white paint washes. By oscillating between concealing and revealing, the memory of movement and place is explored, building a complex surface requiring layers of looking by the viewer.
